lost, sigur ros

I know I'm totally late for this train, but... Holy cow, Lost is such a cool show! After hearing so many good things, I finally made an effort last night to get a hold of the DVD. I checked Netflix, which I've never had a delay getting a DVD in the past. For Lost, discs 2-5 are "Available Now", but disc 1 was listed as "Very Long Wait". I've never seen that before. So I swallow my morals, and start dialing Blockbusters. Lots of stores had discs 2-5, but no one had disc 1. I call some independents (Rocket Video) -- same story. The ninth store I call (Blockbuster on Pico) had it. I immediately put it on hold.

Halbe and I watched the 2 hour Pilot last night. We both had trouble sleeping, partially from being freaked out, partially from excitement.

"What kind of thing would do something like that?"

I'm so glad there's a cracked-out (should "cracked-out" be hyphenated?) rocker on the island -- the comedic relief is welcome.

I watched the second episode this morning. The show is just staying so awesome. It's ending on this cheery, everyone getting along note with some reggae, but then the final shot is some guy staring at a family, just staring, with this ominous music. Gah! What's he gonna do? We don't know! I love it! I haven't been this jazzed for a show since, dare I say it... X-Files? And yes, I know lot's of people are watching the show, and are already onto season two (I'm Tivo-ing it for later consumption), so please don't start telling me awesome details of things coming up ("Didja hear about the hatch??"). I just want to let the quality wash over me in an awesome wave. I'm glad I hopped this train; better late than never!

In unrelated news, has anyone heard about this awesome new band, Nirvana??

I've been invited to see Sigur Ros tonight at the Hollywood Bowl. The friend that invited me is a KCRW employee, and as a result got free tix. The shots I saw on my friends list of the show in Seattle looked awesome, so I'm, again, very excited. I think this is only my... second live show in LA? The other was the LA Philharmonic, also at the Bowl. I need to get out more. I got reservations for dinner at Largo on the 28th to see Jon Brion. I've been meaning to do that since *before* I moved down here.

We're up to disc four now and it just keeps getting better. The first couple episodes were great, but they're really hitting their stride in the middle here now. You're in for some great surprises.

Charlie is pretty funny, but I tend to think Hurley is kind of the comic relief on the show.

Some people are calling it not only the greatest show since the X-Files, but the greatest show since Twin Peaks. I'm not sure I would go THAT far, but it's damn good. X-Files and Lost are pretty firmly in the "mainstream TV" camp, while Twin Peaks was straight-up weird and never broke out of its cult status.

I never got into Twin Peaks. I kept seeing random shows from the middle of its run. I think to really get into it, I'd need to watch from the beginning.

Hurley is kinda funny. I don't know. He wasn't once a hobbit, though.

Fortunately for you, Paramount just reacquired the rights to both seasons of Twin Peaks and is going to release them both next year (supposedly). Then you'll have your chance.

wow. that's amazing news. I have the first season on DVD, but I never made it through the second season (on VHS) because my VCR broke around episode 20-something, my housemate got way ahead of me in the watching cycle, and I never got around to re-renting.

(although after the main mystery is solved, the show went downhill pretty fast)

Yeah, they weren't trying too hard toward the end, either, when the announcement was made that the show wouldn't be renewed for another season. The final episode - presided over by Lynch himself - is some of the most tedious, no-sense-makin' bullshit I've ever seen. The very last scene, though, is brilliant insofar as it's a big "fuck you" to the network and even the fans themselves. You could tell Lynch was supremely pissed that the show hadn't been picked up again.

I've been on the train all along, and now, thanks to my Dad's b-day present to me, Adrienne is hopping on the bandwagon as well.

Maybe when she's caught up she'll start coming over on wednesdays for TV dates. Yay!

Not to give anything away, but:

Pay attention to the color purple. There will be a quiz.

color purple? the movie with oprah? wha? huh?? i'm confused.

yes, I am on the bandwagon... DA and I just finished Disc 2 last night. we LOVE Charlie & Hurley, like to ogle Captain Falafal and Mr. White Trash Con Man, Lock is creepy, and Kate needs to lose the perpetually weepy look.

so glad i'm not the only one just discovering this show. :) but my luck (see Firefly & Carnivale), it'll get dropped after this season.

That's what Sawyer (Mr. Trailer Trash Con Man) called him in the last ep we watched. I thought it was hilarious. we started calling the Korean guy "cum suk mi cok". we're bad....

Once we catch up, we should all get together and watch it! May Devon and I borrow your season one discs so that we can stop forking over hard earned cash to corporate slime? We'd be oh so appreciative.
